Project Overview
This kitchen plays with contrast in a deliberate way. Navy blue lower cabinetry anchors the room, while bright white upper cabinets keep the space open and light. Gold hardware and fixtures introduce warmth and refinement.
The backsplash was designed to bridge these elements. A classic white subway tile, slightly elongated for a more contemporary proportion, delivers familiarity with a subtle modern edge. Paired with dark black grout, the installation becomes graphic and structured.
Integrated wood floating shelves cut cleanly through the tile field, adding warmth and texture while maintaining balance.

Material & Layout
The elongated subway tile maintains the timeless appeal of traditional 3x6 tile, but its extended proportions give the backsplash a cleaner, more linear rhythm.
Black grout dramatically defines each tile. This choice leaves little room for inconsistency; alignment must be exact. Any deviation in spacing or leveling becomes immediately visible when contrast is high.

Integrating the Shelving
Floating wood shelves were intentionally integrated into the tiled wall. This required careful sequencing. First, establishing the full tile layout before shelving placement. Precise cuts allow the shelves to appear embedded rather than applied. Finally, maintaining consistent grout lines above and below each shelf.
The goal was continuity, allowing the shelving to feel built-in without interrupting the rhythm of the backsplash.

The Result
The finished installation feels clean, graphic, and balanced. The navy cabinetry grounds the space, the white tile brightens it, and the black grout adds definition. Gold hardware introduces contrast without overpowering the palette.
Classic materials are slightly refined and precision elevates something familiar into something modern.
